The Nature Explore Classroom at Creative Tykes

The Nature Explore Classroom at Creative Tykes in Evansville, IN is the first certified Nature Explore Classroom in Indiana. Owner, Anissa Fletcher has created a beautiful outdoor classroom that is inviting to all ages.

Art Area

Logs and plants were used to provide visual barriers while separating exploration areas according to types of activities. Areas are designated not only by incorporating various textures and materials for flooring, but also with signs. The name of each area was wood burned onto a tree cookie and then mounted on a tree branch.

The classroom is designed around the natural elements of their region. The majority of the wood and various materials have been reclaimed from the school property and through contributions and labor of families. Stone and cedar were used for durability and natural longevity. The children have helped design each of the areas and assisted with the majority of construction. This gave them the opportunity to see simple tools being used and have a chance to engage in their use also.

Messy Area

This site was constructed with the intention to preserve the natural tranquility of a forest with an untouched landscape allowing replication of the qualities of which a child would enjoy in a forest. Natural elements were incorporated in a very intentional way to encourage natural exploration and discovery. The space is uncluttered so that children can access the space and use it purposefully. Most of the classroom plantings are perennials with regular maintenance needed only on “the field”, which is their open area, and “the garden” area.

Creative Tykes is increasing family and community awareness and ongoing involvement in nature education for young children through prospective client packets, students, parents, volunteers and articles in their newsletter. They are currently putting together a Nature Explore Club to offer parents and to reach out into the community-where the possibilities of spreading the message of nature education are endless. Owner, Anissa Fletcher, would like to thank all the friends and families that helped make it all possible.
